Tomin x Dada Strain x 2
LIVE INVITES... Celebrating Tomin's 'A Willed and Conscious Balance' with a pre-release listening party (@Sisters, Sun 10/27) + an album release concert (@Brooklyn Music School, Mon 11/11)
Full disclosure: Tomin is one of my favorite young musicians in Bklyn. Since I was first introduced to his playing inside the kinda-all-star cauldron of the magical “Angel Bat Dawid, jaimie branch and friends” show at the mighty IRL in the summer of 2021, Tomin’s rare live appearances and recordings have revealed the Bklyn-born/-raised multi-horn player, writer/arranger and occasional band-leader as a rare talent with a skill-set unlike that of his community peers. I am hardly the only one who’s rated Tomin highly. The good folks at International Anthem compiled his previously released home recordings into the glorious Flores para Verene/Cantos para Caramina, and on November 1st will release his first full-length album as a band-leader, the incredible A Willed and Conscious Balance.
More disclosure: I was proud to write the notes that accompany both releases. And I am now really excited to help bring Tomin’s music to your ears, with a couple of events at which Bklyn folks can hear A Willed and Conscious Balance.
On Monday, November 11th at the Brooklyn Music School auditorium (126 St Felix Street), Tomin x Dada Strain present the record release show of A Willed and Conscious Balance. Joining Tomin in bringing this music to life is an exceptional group of players that Perea-Chamblee had bonded with on his sonic travels, the ensemble which recorded the album, whose busy collective schedule makes this performance an (almost-guaranteed) one-time-only affair. Playing alongside Tomin will be trumpeter Linton Smith II, cellists Clérida Eltimé and Lester St. Louis, keyboardist Teiana Davis, bassist Luke Stewart and drummer Tcheser Holmes. This will be the first time that the pieces on A Willed and Conscious Balance will be presented in their finished form.
The Brooklyn Music School in Fort Greene holds a special place in Tomin’s creative development: it was where he made his stage debut as a ballet-dancing three year-old. Tomin's return to the century-old theater space marks another major milestone of his musical life. Please join us! Tickets HERE!
Before that though…
On Sunday, October 27th at Sisters (900 Fulton Street), Tomin and I are gonna host an album listening event where he will premiere A Willed and Conscious Balance in full. Before we play the new album, Tomin and I will spin some records and tracks related to the record, music which is important to his practice. Afterwards, Tomin and I will do a short conversation about his music. There may be some copies of the album for sale a little early. trust that it will be a wonderfully low-key, friends’n’family affair, and we’d love to see y’all there. (I know you love Tomin’s music because I’ve played his tracks on the radio show and during deep-listening sets, and some of y’all have reached out asking what it was.) The listening party is gong to be free. Join us if you can.
