NYMM Radio City presents "Local Frequencies," Wednesday, June 25 @ The Lot Radio
NYC INVITE: A panel discussion on How Independent Radio Nurtures the New York Music Community, co-produced by The Lot Radio, Dada Strain and co-sign for New York Music Month
Local New York radio has long played a crucial role in the development of the city's musical development, beaming its new-sound possibilities out into the world. A primary outlet for all the great musicians been drawn to make fair Gotham their home.
Towards the beginning of the radio age and the recorded/transmission century, flagship NYC stations of nascent national radio networks would broadcast live performances from local ballrooms and halls. As radio technology expanded, the breadth of its community reach grew, and the city’s musical cultures continued to proliferate, the relationship between the medium and New York musickers only deepened. Since the rise of the FM band in the late-1960s, radio DJs have championed local artists and left-of-center local sounds; club DJs hosted their own late-night mix-shows, breaking new records and rhythms; and specialty programming by independent broadcasters has accentuated the sounds of local neighborhoods and communities. Despite the myriad changes to have taken place in the city, local radio’s commitment to local sounds and scenes remains true to this day. Even if it doesn’t seem instantly obvious.
This ongoing history is the basis for “Local Frequencies,” a conversation hosted by The Lot Radio and Dada Strain, co-produced with co-sign as part of New York Music Month. The evening panel, which takes place at The Lot Radio in Greenpoint, on Wednesday June 25th, starting at 7p, will gather a small who’s who of past and present radio DJs that are also active participants in the NYC music community. They’ll examine the city’s radio history, explore the current state of local radio (terrestrial, digital, pirate), explain how it reflects a healthy music ecosystem, and where it’s going next.
Joining the “Local Frequencies” discussion moderated by Dada Strain’s Piotr Orlov will be:
Ayanna Heaven, who hosts WKCR’s weekly “Across 110th Street” show, and is a popular club and event DJ around the city.
Barbie Bertisch & Paul Raffaele, who host The Lot Radio’s popular weekly show, publish a local NYC music ‘zine, run a record label, and produce club nights, all under the name “Love Injection.”
Duane Harriott, who used to host the long-running WFMU radio show “Duane Train,” worked as a buyer for Manhattan’s legendary Other Music record shop, co-founded the great Negroclash club night, and remains a popular club and event DJ around the city, and works as a music supervisor.
Francois Vaxelaire, who is the founder and operator of The Lot Radio.
Jeannie Hopper, who is the longtime NYC DJ and dance-musicker, and host of the “Liquid Sound Lounge” program, which began broadcasting on WBAI starting in 1993 and now streams via Twitch.
