Dada Strain presents... 2 x Live Bklyn Sounds, August 2024
LIVE SHOW INVITES: STEFA* + A.B.E.L.A + Mickey Perez + Toribio @ Industry City Courtyard, Thurs. 8/8 // Joseph Allred + Caroline Davis & Wendy Eisenberg @ Light and Sound Design, Sunday 8/11
Dada Strain is co-presenting two great community shows in mid August 2024 in Bklyn — and you’re invited.
On Thursday, August 8th, for the Industry City x In Good Company Backyard Jam, Dada Strain has put together Ritmo, Improvisación, Electricidad, an evening featuring live music by STEFA* and A.B.E.L.A. and DJing by the incomporable Mickey Perez and Toribio. It will take place at Industry City, 36th Street & 3rd Avenue, Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The yard is open all day. DJing begins at 6p, and live sets at 7:15p. Admission is absolutely FREE.
Ritmo, Improvisación, Electricidad was designed to bring a spotlight to the diverse talents of a few New York Latinx musicians who work with rhythm and electronics, all of whom Dada Strain has been loudly, proudly and deeply supportive of. I’ve wanted to throw a show with all these folks forever, and doing it on the outskirts of the great pan-Latin Sunset Park neighborhood was a catalyst.
The incredible Queens-born genderless/genreless singer-songwriter-producer STEFA* has just released one of the year’s best albums, Born With An Extra Rib, filled with songs powered by punk rock energy, swinging synths, global rhythms, and an experimental artist’s vision. A.B.E.L.A. stands for Asociación de Bateristas ElektrónikXs de Latinoamerika, and is a mysterious ever-evolving syndicato of percussionists and electronic producers, who are yet to record; think Kraftwerk-meets-a-drum-circle. Besides being two of the best party DJs in NYC, Mickey Perez and Toribio are the selecters behind the increasingly legendary Public Service community park jams that have been taking place throughout Bklyn the past couple of summers. This is a killer Thursday evening line-up.
Then on Sunday, August 11th, Dada Strain presents live sets by Joseph Allred and the duo of Caroline Davis & Wendy Eisenberg, as well as DJ selections by Piotr Orlov, at the wonderful Light and Sound Design Studio loft, a secret location (RSVP for address) in Greenpoint, Bklyn. Doors/sound at 5p, live music begins at 6p. Tickets range in price from $20-$30 (paid Dada Strain subscribers will receive a discount code shortly).
Joseph Allred is an exceptional singer-guitarist-multi-instrumentalist (and visual artist) from Northern Tennessee, whose (primarily) acoustic music mixes folk transcendentalism with spiritual drones. I came upon their huge body of work earlier this year, saw Joseph play at Big Ears and have not been able to look back. This is a rare NYC appearance for them. Saxophonist Caroline Davis and guitarist-vocalist Wendy Eisenberg, on the other hand, are two of our city’s most prolific players, almost impossible to keep up with. The reason I try is that they’re also two of our finest improvisers, exploring so many sonic spaces between atonal free-music freak-outs, and gorgeous leftfield song-forms. And they play with so many great people. Together they made another of my favorite albums of 2024, Accept When, and I can’t wait to see what playing next to Joseph inspires in them.
I hope you join us for some (or all) of this beautiful music. Thank you for reading, for following and for supporting.
