INVITE: The "Electric Strings of Life" showcase with music by Samir LanGus, Natural Information Society, Mendoza*Hoff*Revels, Wendy Eisenberg & Ryan Sawyer Duo, and Harriet Tubman + DJing by Gamall
Dada Strain is proud to host its first official showcase, on Saturday, January 13th, during the Bklyn Marathon night of the 20th annual Winter Jazzfest: Dada Strain @ WJF (unofficially, the “Electric Strings of Life” showcase).
Dada Strain @ WJF takes place at the great Union Pool, 484 Union Avenue, Williamsburg. Doors will open at 5:30p and live music begins at 6:15p.
Admission is only via a full Winter Jazzfest Brooklyn Marathon pass, which gives you access to music at Union Pool and seven other venues around Williamsburg. The marathon pass is $65 (not cheap, I know) but you can also use the code DADA for a 20% discount.
Dada Strain @ WJF is incredibly proud to present (in chronological order):
Samir LanGus - The young Moroccan Gnawa master who now resides in New York City. Samir plays the electric guembri, a three-string North African instrument, and will perform in a percussion-heavy sextet. Gnawa rhythm in the Western world.
Natural Information Society - A world-renowned group led by another electric guembri player, Joshua Abrams, and the harmonium of his partner, Lisa Alvarado. The core NIS quartet also features Jason Stein on bass clarinet, and Mikel Patrick Avery on drums. The band’s performances often also include guest players. Rhythmic minimalist trance, full of improvised pulses and syncopated wonders.
Mendoza*Hoff*Revels - A brand new quartet fronted by old colleagues, the electric guitarist Ava Mendoza and bass guitarist Dev Hoff, and rounded out with the tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis and drummer Ches Smith. Electric jazz-rock fusion for the body and the head.
Ryan Sawyer & Wendy Eisenberg Duo - Electric guitarist/vocalist Wendy Eisenberg and drummer/vocalist Ryan Sawyer are spectacular players, collaborative cornerstones in a variety of New York’s improvised music circles — and also partners in the trio Darlin’ (with cellist/bassist Lester St. Louis). Jazz-folk songs, instrumentals and otherwise.
Harriet Tubman - Playing together as a unit since 1998, guitarist Brandon Ross, bass guitarist Melvin Gibbs and drummer J.T. Lewis are long-time standard-bearers at the intersection of New York’s rock, punk, fusion-jazz and experimental music communities. Electric power-trio, with ambience, dub and distortion, into the future.
DJing before and between the live sets will be provided by a great friend of Dada Strain, and the excellent musicker, Gamall Awad.
